Faraway Sir Ronald

It's been on and off for years but finally the time has come for Sir Ronald to be put out to pasture in Pembrokeshire and become Faraway Sir Ronald. Plenty of gardening to be done and the drink is already a distant memory. The KNOBS, who are they?

Knobs 1 Buntingford Town Vets 0

It was nearly 180 minutes without a goal between the two sides but a late penalty clinched a hard fought victory for the Knebworth Old Boys.

In beautiful sunshine, with a bare 11, the KNOBS started slowly and gave Buntingford the early initiative but they failed to capitalise thanks to some good defending.  In fact despite the hot weather, the energy shown by the KNOBS team was impressive and this started from the front through the tireless running of Richard, who was well supported by Gerry on the right hand side.  There were few chances…in fact, so few I can’t remember any in the first half.  Oh…I forgot, Phil hit a beautiful shot that was easily gathered by their keeper but he did strike it well.

In the second half, both teams battled valiantly and it was dominated by both defences.  Ian was particularly impressive clearing his lines and being strong and powerful in the air but the whole back four showed good defensive skills, with Darren B contributing well at left back, Tony showing his ball skills in the middle and John B doing both his defensive work, as well as helping Gerry where he could.  Although they were dominating territorially, they created few chances, with the returning Trevor having few saves to make, although he did do a marvellous fisting job to clear a corner when we were under pressure.

Chris Wilson had our closest chance before the goal after being played through by Bully but he clipped the bar with a long range strike.  The goal finally came with ten minutes to go when Richard was scythed down in the box.  Even though their central defender didn’t agree with the decision, there was little complaint from their side which suggests it was a close call but probably the right decision.  Bully tucked the penalty away with aplomb in the bottom left hand corner.

Vinny came on for a late cameo and although they huffed and puffed, looking for a goal, we actually looked livelier on the break but the game rather fizzled out in the end.  A couple of moments to mention were Gerry’s marvellous heading technique that saw him collapse like Tommy Cooper at the Palladium and John B rampaging forward with a minute to go and being berated by Ian.  We all had fun though, didn’t we?

We certainly did in the pub.  Oh it’s good to be back at our spiritual home and there was much merriment.  There was even a coup…sort of.  Darren A is to blame.  He’s a troublemaker that one.  Thanks must go to our opponents today who were very supporting and it was good to seem all at the pub after the game.

Four games unbeaten, three wins on the bounce, two clean sheets amongst them…as they say on Masterchef - ‘Football doesn’t get better than this!’

I was very impressed with the other team all having matching training tops. We have about £5,000 of funds in the club bank account.

What should we spend it on?

A nose job for John B

I suggest we reduce the match fees to £5 per game to start with and invest in 2 new kits.

What idiot thought £6 was a good idea, makes John's life a pain. £5 please!

Maths Man said...

Even £5 is tricky as a player who play only a half has to pay £2.50.

Why not have £2 per half and free football to the kit washer?

Chairman Gerry said...

What about £1 for each 10 minutes played, now that's a fine idea and I will be sure to push it through at the agm.

Why not scrap or half the signing on fee?

Why not charge £10 per game, £5 per half game and a signing on fee of £25. If you have the chance to play for Knebworth and live the Knebworth dream then well worth it.

You miss the point. We already have £5,000 in the bank. There is no point in increasing this. We need to find a fair way to share the benefit of the £5,000.

Any other sensible Ideas?

Yes. Fuck off and get a life.

The last time I mentioned this to JB I was informed that there was no spare money. I think it was all spent on the 25th anniversary celebrations.

UKIP 2nd in the Knebworth and Codicote election. Who's to blame, Knebworth or Codicote? Who is the fool? The fool or the fool who follows the fool?

Can the first 6 names on the team sheet pay 20p, then the next 2 pay £1 and then the next 2 pay £4 and the final player pays £100? This way we would always get near full capacity for every game and those desperate to represent the KNOBS would pay for the privilege.

Interesting views made here. At the AGM I will certainly put club finances on the agends. John, can you please e-mail me a copy of the accounts when you get a chance?

Thank you.

There will be no accounts this year

The clubs statements should be available Sunday for players to see, this information should be public.

I agree with Benny. We need transparency. This is the only way the club can move forward. If I'm spending £6 each week and the kit gets cleaned without using that money, I want to know where it is going. If the King of Bhutan ran his country like this, Bono would be up in arms. Get Hans Blix on the case.

Pitches don't come cheap.Subsidising the Thursday 5 a side costs.
Referee gets his whack- very reliable.
There are no acCunts photographed that would be a tad rude.

You've made some good points there. I looked on the web to learn more about the issue and found most individuals will go along with your views on this website.
